Learning a language is not a destination. It is a long journey and for the best students, it never really ends. Like any journey, it's good to have a guidebook (a text). But it's also important to raise up our heads and look at all the resources around us: newspapers, video, audio, the internet and most importantly, people. 

And because it's a long journey, it's best to keep a regular, steady pace. Don't try to do everything in a week, a month or a year. Plan your study and set reasonable, manageable goals. Don't expect to be perfect and don't be discouraged by mistakes. English is not skydiving or math! Often we learn more by making a mistake than by checking a correct answer and hurrying on.

I know from experience that learning a new language can be very frustrating at times, and in sometimes you may think that you are not making progress.  But if you keep studying and practicing, you will wake up one day and realize that you have improved.  The knowledge builds up over time. 

It is also important to experiment with what you know, and practice your English whenever you can.  Speaking with native speakers, you will discover that we often use "non-textbook" English, which is just as important to learn as what you will find in a textbook if you want to be a fluent speaker.  Don't worry if you make mistakes.  Only by experimenting with what you know, and trying new sentences and new ways of putting sentences together, will you learn what works and what doesn't.  And then  you can become truly fluent.

Language is the reservoir of culture through which we can learn to see ourselves and others in the one-ness of our human condition.  Through the appreciation of our individual histories as well as our shared experiences we approach a window into the soul.

After more than twenty years as a professional musician and music teacher in the U.S, I became TEFL certified with additional endorsement for teaching business English in 2006.  In January of 2007, I moved to Japan where I have continued my musical pursuits in addition to teaching English to students of all ages and proficiency levels.  As a believer in the communicative style of teaching I believe my role is primarily that of a facilitator, who's job it is to guide students to a personal discovery of language through meaningful experiences of real conversation.

Instructor's Coment:                            　                      　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　 I enjoy helping students to learn English by working alongside them, so that we can identify their English needs and areas to improve.  I like to focus specifically on, and go into depth with, not only English grammar and vocabulary, but also cultural aspects of how English communication relates to their present roles.  Once they have an insight into the cultural aspects of English, my students' TOEIC scores improve by about 20% and they feel much more comfortable communicating in English in their work or school environment.

 I have been teaching in Japan for over six years now.  I really enjoy teaching English here and meeting Japanese people.  I am always working hard to try to improve my ability as a teacher.  Last year I took another teaching qualification from the University of Cambridge, and I am now CELTA qualified.

I think that Japanese students of English have a lot of challenges, and I always admire students who are interested in improving themselves through studying a foreign language.  Studying English is not just about spending hours and hours with boring textbooks, or memorising pages and pages of vocabulary notes.  It's about trying to communicate, and learning to explain your ideas, it's about sharing culture, and teaching me what you think about the world we share.  I want you to express yourself, and I really hope I can help you improve your ability to do so.
