英語を話そうとして、ふとそんな疑問がわくことは多いのではないでしょうか。このコラムでは、ネイティブがビジネスシーンでよく使う言い回しやフレーズを紹介していきます。
難しい英単語を覚えるより、すでに知っている単語を使った言い回しを覚えて、より自然な英語表現と語彙を身に着けましょう。
うわべだけ～する to scratch the surface
This means to get a superficial, introductory understanding of a subject.
直訳すると「表面をひっかく」という意味のこのidiomは、物事の表面的な、初歩的な理解を指します。
例文
- Astronomers have just began to scratch the surface of what is out there in space.
- We have done several experiments, but we have yet to even scratch the surface with this new virus.
1の意味は、天文学者は、宇宙空間のほんの初歩的な理解をし始めたに過ぎない。
2は、我々は幾つかの実験をしてみたが、この新しいウイルスについてはまだ何もわかっていないも同然である。
Virusは、日本では「ウイルス」というのが一般的ですが、正しい英語の発音ではありません。

日本語にはたくさんの外来語、いわゆるカタカナ英語や和製英語が存在しています。
日常生活の中で頻繁に使用されるので、つい英単語のつもりでネイティブとの会話にも使ってしまいますが、実際にはネイティブにはまったく意味の通じない言葉も数多くあります。

日本では、さまざまなメディアで人々は英語に触れています。例えば「OK」「バイバイ」「ケースバイケース」などは、日常生活ににすっかりなじんだフレーズです。
これらの言葉は日本語での会話では問題なく通用しますが、ネイティブスピーカーにとっては奇妙に感じられたり、混乱をきたす原因。こうした「日本語英語」の単語やフレーズを見て行きましょう。
Many Japanese English speakers are known as “false beginners”. In Japan, people are exposed to English everyday in various forms of media. Many English phrases or words such as “O.K.”, “bye bye”, or “case by case” have made their way into everyday speech. While these words make perfect sense in Japanese conversation, to native speakers they might seem strange or cause considerable amounts of confusion. Let’s take a look at a few of these “Japanese English” words and phrases:
通じない日本語英語（68）アイドル
– this words has a similar meaning in English although there are some differences.
In Japan the word idol refers to an entire industry of people in music, tv, etc.
In the west the word idol usually refers to a person someone admires.
Incorrect usage: My favorite idols are AKB48 and Morning Musume!
Instead: My father is my idol, when I was growing up I always looked up to him.
解説
日本でアイドルというと、主に芸能界の人気者を意味します。
If you refer to someone such as a film, pop, or sports star as an idol, you mean that they are greatly admired or loved by their fans.
しかし、英語では広く敬愛される人（もの）を指すようで、似て非なる言葉になるようです。
また、Fallen idol というと、If you refer to someone as a fallen idol, you mean that they have lost people’s respect and admiration because of something bad that they have done.
薬物の使用やスキャンダル等でfallen idol になるケースが随分あります。

– this refers to sport, hobby, etc that the speaker is interested in. It has no equivalent in English.
Incorrect usage: Lately, my boom is hot yoga
Instead: Lately I’ve been really into hot yoga.
解説
私も初めてマイブームなる言葉を聞いた時には驚きました。意味は何とか推測できますが、変な日本語？で、英語に同様な言葉はないようです。
She個人的に今“はまっている”ことを指すようですが、例２のinto は辞書ではto like and be interested in somethingと説明されていています。She is heavy into tennis and gardeningといったら、テニスと園芸に夢中という意味になります。

- If you buy this computer, you will receive customer support for 6 months.
- I want to repair my phone but this company is known for having very bad customer service.
解説
アフターサービスはとても重要です。しかし、英語圏で after serviceと言っても通用しませんから、customer support なりcustomer serviceを覚えましょう。
日本ではよく「お客様は神様です」と言いますが、英語で似たような表現にThe customer is always right というのがあります。家電量販店などでは、customer service(support) center がありますから、何か問題が起きたらそこで相談して、supportを受けてください。
